Technology does not stand still.
Browsers update, security threats evolve, and search algorithms change. When a site is ignored, the infrastructure slowly erodes.
- Security patches are missed, leaving back doors open.
- Technical debt accumulates as links break and sitemaps become outdated.
- Business information becomes inaccurate, creating a disconnect between the site and the actual company.
This approach leads to a couple of major problems:
- Susceptible to hacking. WordPress is a large attack surface, and if security patches are not maintained, security holes are going to show up and there are thousands of hackers constantly trying to break it.
- Loss of authority. Google prioritizes sites that show signs of life. An abandoned site eventually sinks in the rankings because it no longer meets modern standards for speed, security, or relevance.
Many business owners are led to believe a website is a one-time purchase. They aren't told that a professional presence requires constant attention to keep it running properly, not just a decorator to paint the walls.
When an audit reveals hundreds of errors or spam injections, the diagnosis is usually Set and Forget. It is the digital equivalent of never changing the oil in a commercial truck. Eventually, the system will fail, usually when the business needs it most.
A properly maintained Digital Foundation requires consistent attention to maintain their value.
