What is a Google Business Profile?

Quick Definition
Google Business Profile (GBP) is a free Google tool that lets a business control how it appears in Google Search and Google Maps, including its name, address, phone number, hours, photos, and customer reviews.

Google Business Profile is the public-facing record Google maintains for a business across Search and Maps. When someone searches for a business by name or for a service in a specific area, the GBP is what appears in the local results panel on the right side of search and in the map listings.

The profile lets the business owner control core information that customers rely on to find and contact them. This includes the business name, physical address, service area, phone number, website URL, hours of operation, business categories, photos, and a description of what the business does. It also serves as the official channel for managing customer reviews and posting updates.

A claimed and verified GBP is key to a well managed Digital Foundation of local search visibility. Without one, a business may appear inconsistently or not at all in local results, even when customers are searching directly for that business by name. With one that is incomplete, outdated, or unmanaged, the business often appears less professional and less trustworthy than competitors who actively maintain their profile.

GBP is free to create and use, but it requires verification through Google before the listing becomes fully active. Verification can happen through postcard, phone, email, or video depending on the business type and location. Once verified, the owner can update information at any time and respond to customer interactions directly through the dashboard.
